This vocal grey tabby first appeared in a managed colony in Jamaica, NY in the summer of 2023. From day one, Kiko made an impression.

He rolled in the dirt, chirped at humans, and meowed for food like a cat who knew how to work a crowd. He wasn’t shy, and he certainly wasn’t afraid to ask for what he wanted.

But behind that playful exterior, something was wrong.

By November 2023, Kiko was showing signs of serious health issues: labored breathing and chronic vomiting. The rescue brought him inside, suspecting a respiratory infection. But antibiotics didn’t help, and several vet visits including sedated exams and radiographs offered few answers.

Eventually, he was diagnosed with feline asthma and placed on a special diet. His foster parents were committed to his recovery, but his breathing still hadn’t improved. That’s when a CT scan and rhinoscopy were recommended. These specialty procedures came with a hefty price tag, but thanks to Guardian Veterinary Specialists and a rescue discount, the team was able to proceed.

The result was a rare diagnosis: nasal stenosis, a condition where the nasal passages are dangerously narrowed.

On the same day, Kiko underwent an endoscopic balloon dilation, a delicate and life-changing procedure. The results were immediate. He could breathe again. He became more active, playful, and full of life. For the first time, he truly began to thrive.

What happened next proves that adopting a rescue cat can change lives on both sides.

As he recovered, Kiko became a nurturing foster brother to other cats. He comforted his sick foster sibling, Poppy, and later bonded deeply with his new companion, Prince. Over time, Kiko’s bright, goofy personality shone through even more.

Earlier this year, his foster parents, already experienced cat fosters, did something they’d never done before. They adopted one of their own.

Kiko officially became a foster fail adoption, and he now lives the good life. He plays with catnip toys, chases tunnel mice, and meows loudly for breakfast like the bold boy he is. He greets his humans at the door, flops dramatically for belly rubs, and gives his all to both love and life.

Why Kiko’s Cat Adoption Story Matters

Kiko’s story is a powerful reminder that cat rescue and adoption doesn’t always follow a straight path. Sometimes it’s messy, expensive, emotional, and completely worth it. For small, volunteer-run rescues like LIC Feral Feeders, support makes all the difference.

At Moggie, we believe in spotlighting these stories and the incredible work that goes into giving every cat a second chance.

For every Moggie sold this June, we are donating 15% to Mission Meow to help more independent cat organisations support cats.
